Technology should remove friction, not create it.
My name is Johnathan, and if there's one thing that's been consistent throughout my life, it's that I love solving puzzles.
For a long time, I thought that passion would lead me into medicine. In high school, my goal was to become a medical diagnostician. I loved the idea of taking a collection of symptoms, finding the root cause, and helping someone through careful analysis. What I eventually realized was that it wasn't medicine I was passionate about. It was understanding complex systems and figuring out how to make them work better.
That's what led me into IT.
As I started learning more about technology, I realized it presented the same kinds of puzzles, just on a much larger scale. Every application, process, device, and workflow is part of a larger system. When those systems are designed well, people can focus on their work. When they're not, technology becomes the obstacle.
Before I even landed my first full time IT position, I was already teaching myself scripting, systems administration, web development, and conference room technology. I wasn't learning those skills just to check boxes on a resume. I wanted to understand how everything worked together.
It didn't take long for me to realize that fixing problems wasn't enough. The real goal is preventing them from happening in the first place. To me, that's what great user experience looks like.
I found myself asking questions that still guide me today.
How can this experience be better?
How can I identify and solve a problem before the user ever notices it?
Working for a managed service provider only reinforced that mindset. Every client had different technology, different challenges, and different ways of doing business. While many people were trying to decide which area of IT to specialize in, I wanted to understand how it all fit together. Infrastructure, cloud, automation, collaboration, audiovisual technology, and user experience never felt like separate disciplines to me. They were all pieces of the same puzzle.
As I continued learning, Microsoft Azure and the Power Platform opened the door to an entirely new way of solving problems. Automation became one of my favorite tools, but it also taught me one of the biggest lessons of my career.
You can't automate a process you don't fully understand.
The best solutions don't start with code. They start with understanding the people, the workflow, and the reason the process exists in the first place. Technology shouldn't exist just because it can. It should remove friction, eliminate repetitive work, and give people more time to focus on the work that actually matters.
To me, automation has never been about replacing people. It's about giving them their time back so they can spend more of it solving problems, helping customers, and doing the work that only people can do.
Today, my passion sits at the intersection of technology, automation, and user experience. Whether I'm designing conference room experiences, improving IT processes, building AI-powered workflows, or looking for ways to simplify everyday tasks, my approach is always the same.
Understand the system first.
Then improve it.
At the end of the day, I don't just enjoy working in IT. I enjoy understanding how things work, finding opportunities to make them better, and creating experiences that feel simple for the people who use them.
If I can save someone time, eliminate frustration, or make technology feel effortless, then I've done my job.
